You know, it just seems we've been gardening all our lives....
One of my earliest memories is of a summer morning - my brothers, sisters and I toiling away in the vegetable garden while friends rode by on bicycles, laughing and waving. But, that's what was required when there were 9 hungry children to feed. Peter has nearly the same memory, just throw in racing a '3-wheeler' down the road after milking at the neighbors farm and a couple less siblings!
Over the years, my love for growing never faded although I couldn't always afford to indulge. So, I learned to grow and divide and gather seed - continuing to build my stock and giving away what extras I could bear to part with. Then, a friend suggested I could sell my extra plants. A way to actually pay for my habit? Perhaps now I could stop hiding flats of annuals and pots of perennials from my husband!
And so, a 'flowers for sale' sign went up by the road and ...people stopped....and they put money in the coffee can - whoo hoo! Over time, we added cut flowers - $5.00 a bunch to pick your own - and bigger signs and more benches and a real greenhouse. All designed and constructed by Peter, an absolute genius at using what's on hand - cutting trees for posts, disassembling long-forgotten equipment for parts, molding scrap-metal into benches or even turning attic boards into beautiful counters! Always with the goal of keeping costs down and prices as low as possible.
Then, Spring of 2008, it suddenly occurred to us that our boys were grown and thriving, the dog and cat were getting on in years and - hmm, maybe it was time to start on our own dream 'retirement' plan. And, Laura's Garden came into being.
That's where you find us today - carrying the dream forward to who knows where but perfectly willing to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week building greenhouses, adding a flower shop and website -as long as we can occasionally lay on our backs in the grass and watch clouds...
Thanks so much for stopping by~ Pete and Laura Dunham
